How CNC Turning Works
CNC turning is a precise and efficient machining process used to produce cylindrical components with exceptional accuracy. The process begins with preparing the raw material, usually in the form of a bar or rod made of metal or plastic, which is clamped into the CNC lathe.
The geometry, dimensions, and toolpaths are programmed in CAD/CAM software, creating a digital plan that guides the machine throughout the process.
During CNC turning, the workpiece rotates at high speed while a stationary cutting tool moves along its surface, removing material and shaping the part. The tool can move axially or radially, enabling a variety of operations, including:
Turning – shaping external surfaces
Facing – creating flat surfaces
Threading – cutting internal and external threads
Grooving – machining slots and channels
