How CNC Milling Works
CNC milling is a highly precise and automated machining process used to produce complex parts from various materials such as metals and plastics. This technology is ideal for manufacturing components with intricate shapes, grooves, holes, and custom designs, ensuring exceptional accuracy and efficiency.
The process begins with preparing a digital design in CAD (Computer-Aided Design) software, which is then converted into CNC machine code using CAM (Computer-Aided Manufacturing) software. The program defines toolpaths, machine movements, and machining parameters.
The selected material is securely clamped to the CNC machine table or vise, ensuring stability during machining. The milling machine uses a rotating cutting tool that moves across multiple axes — typically 3, 4, or 5 — to precisely shape the material into the desired form.
During CNC milling, the machine removes material in accordance with programmed instructions. Operations may include:
Facing
– creating flat surfaces
Slotting
– cutting channels or grooves
Drilling
– producing holes with precise diameters
Contour milling
– machining complex curves and profiles
CNC milling machines achieve extremely high accuracy, often within ±0.005 mm, ensuring repeatability and precision even in large-scale production runs.
After machining, each component undergoes rigorous quality control to guarantee full compliance with technical specifications. Additional finishing processes — such as deburring, polishing, or coating — may be applied to ensure a flawless final product.
Thanks to the ability to produce both prototypes and large series, CNC milling is one of the most versatile and efficient solutions in modern manufacturing.
At 3D Path, we combine cutting-edge CNC milling technology with the expertise of our specialists to deliver components of the highest quality, tailored to your needs.
